01
Discovery Call and Consultation
All projects start with a discovery call. This 15 minute phone call is intended to answer any lingering questions that the FAQ or website didn’t address as well as to determine if we are a good fit for you and your design project.
If we determine that we are a good fit for your project, we will schedule a paid on-site with a designer from Gail Barley Interiors. We meet with you to see your space, discuss your needs and vision, assess the pain points, and take photos. At the end of this meeting, we should have all of the information we need to draw up a contract for your project and you should know that Gail Barley Interiors is the right design firm for you.
02
Proposal for Design Services
After our in-person meeting, we will draw up your contract. Your contract will outline everything discussed in the meeting and clarify the scope of work. It will also include your design fee and payment schedule for moving forward. Once we receive your signed contract and first payment, we enter the design phase!
03
Design Phase
The design phase begins with a site visit to take measurements and gather any more information we need to transform your space. We ask that you share inspiration images so we can focus in on your particular design style. Once we have all this information, we will begin work on your designs as outlined in your contract.
If you are working on a remodel or a new construction project, this is the time period where we will schedule visits to select items like plumbing, appliances, tile, flooring, millwork, etc. This can take several weeks to complete and will require multiple showroom visits. We do our best to break it into manageable pieces and ensure that we are following-up and keeping track of selections to help create your overall vision. This includes updated spreadsheets to provide to your builder or contractor as well as selection boards to view all of your selections in one place. It also includes any custom millwork, and renderings to help you better visualize the end result. Since this is done on an hourly basis, we defer to you and your specific needs on what you would like help with and what you can handle on your own.
If working on purely furnishings, an average room design takes about 2-3 weeks to complete. Once we know we are close to a finished design, we will reach out to you for an in-office visit. That office meeting will be when the magic happens.
04
Design Presentation
Your design presentation will take place in our office/showroom. It will include floor plans, renderings, finish samples, furniture, fabrics, and anything else that we would need to include to help you see our vision for your home. It is a comprehensive look at the design we have created based on our discussions and your inspiration images. This meeting concludes with a proposal for all costs as well as a copy of the design presentation for you to review at home.
After this meeting, we may have one round of revisions. This could be as simple as replacing one item, or as complex as having a second meeting to review an entirely new direction. After our first meeting, we are often close to a final design, but it is normal for there to be minor tweaks. We have back-up options in place if something doesn’t resonate with you immediately and can provide them within a few days. Once we have a design you feel excited to see come to life, we move to the next room within your scope of work, or on to the implementation phase.
05
Implementation and Installation
After you have approved all design decisions we begin implementation. This starts with payment for all approved furnishings. Once payment is in hand, we start the process of purchasing all of the furnishings to complete your beautiful, curated design. Procurement takes several days and once it’s complete we send you an estimated timeline for delivery as well as a final invoice with all shipping and service fees included. We strive to avoid surprises in billing.
While we wait for furnishings to arrive, we work with our trades to update anything structural. This can include full renovation work, paint, electrical work, plumbing changes, built-in installation, wallpaper installation, window treatment installation, or specialty items. Our goal is to be minimally disruptive while also ensuring an excellent result. We’ve worked with many trade specialists for years and have curated a great team of referrals to help bring our vision to life. You are welcome to hire your own tradespeople independently or hire one of Gail Barley Interiors recommended and trusted vendors.
We remain in contact with you throughout this process, providing regular check-ins and updates. As we near installation day, we will reach out with an estimated arrival time, a list of all products to be delivered, and updates on any remaining items or questions.
Finally, we’ve reached install day! Our goal is to provide a one-day installation. You leave for the day, and return to a beautiful home you can walk in and enjoy. No trash to throw out, or additional labor on your part! If a one-day installation is not available, we work with you to understand your unique timeline. Installation day usually requires our full team to be on site as well as tradespeople to complete the final design. This can include drapery installers, art installers, and handymen. We kindly ask that you refrain from being home for install as it requires our full and dedicated attention.
Once your install is complete you are welcome to start living in and enjoying your new space! We provide you with a packet on cleaning and care for you to refer to in the future. If there are any follow-up questions or concerns, we address them and ensure your total satisfaction with your new home. After the project is completed, we may reach out to photograph your space for our portfolio. We discuss this with you in advance and always strive to protect client privacy. If your project is ever published, we immediately share it with you for you to enjoy!

Our pricing is unique to each project and varies based on your desires and needs. Like homes, there is no one size fits all. Your scope of work and fee structure will be part of what is determined at the initial consultation.
For construction projects, we charge an hourly fee billed out in increments against an agreed upon retainer. You control how much input you need from us and how much you invest. In our initial meeting, we can give you an estimated figure for hours needed based on your project.
For interior decorating or design projects, we create a flat fee based on the overall scope determined at the initial consultation. Flat fees are billed out periodically over the course of the project with a final fee to be paid upon completion.

This is up to you! We value a close collaborative working relationship with our clients and always strive to incorporate their vision into the design process. We recognize that not everyone wants to or has the time to be closely involved in every step of the project. If you prefer a hands off approach, you can lean on our team with 40+ years of expertise to deliver a cohesive design that fits your aesthetic and life style. If you would rather be a more involved partner, we can include you every step of the way.

Each interior design project is unique and has its own timeline and scope. For a new construction project, we typically say to plan on a year from breaking ground to moving in.
Furnishings take an average of 3-4 months to be installed after receipt of payment and all design decisions finalized.
If you have a unique challenge or timeline you are trying to meet, give us a call. We always work to meet our client deadlines and will be straightforward with you about what is possible.

Gail always had an interest in old and vintage items. Her love of antiques was solidified on a trip to Rhinebeck Antique show with her Grandmother in her early twenties. From that point forward she was on a mission to learn all she could about antiques: asking questions of dealers, reading home magazines cover to cover, collecting and studying books on antiques. Gail’s love, knowledge and appreciation for antiques has never waned and they have always been included in her personal spaces.
Claire grew up with an antique-filled home and a passion for vintage pieces. She has filled her personal home with many inherited and vintage items and loves the collected look for herself and for her clients.
Adrienne is a notorious thrifter and loves nothing more than scouring local thrift shops for amazing finds. Her own home is decorated with thrifted and vintage pieces she finds on her outings.
We love it when clients want to incorporate these one-of-a-kind items into their designs.

Of course. We know conversations about money can be uncomfortable, but it is key to be on the same page about budget. In our consultation, we discuss budget and share our experience about the realities of construction and furniture costs.
For furnishings clients, our team maintains a budget spreadsheet throughout the project. If we have budgetary concerns, we discuss this with you frankly at the beginning of the project.
Did your contractor or builder provide you with an allowance? We will review this in detail to ensure that the allowance covers the quality of materials to match the quality of your home.
